Vacant Shopfronts

Vacant Shopfronts

Artbox seeks to find creatives to produce installations, artworks or activations for vacant shopfronts. These commissions are intended to liven up high streets where business closures have impacted the amenity of precincts. For this project, we are curating a number of art displays that are physical, dynamic/ kinetic/ interactive and kid-safe. They are intended to be on public display for a period of several days/weeks, and will be exposed to a broad, unfiltered audience, day and night. We welcome expressions of interest from diverse groups and backgrounds, that cater for diverse groups and backgrounds. We are also looking for a limited number of moving image artworks for projection.

The works don’t have to be new and can have been shown before. This is not an acquisitive program.

Some shopfronts will have a very large window, some will have multiple smaller ones. Some will have a lot of depth, some might feature a nice white wall at the rear, etc. You could also add a freestanding wall/drapes to block out the rear of the space to create an enclosed display at the front. Please mention if your work is best suited for a certain type of space in your proposal.

Your budget should cover materials, production, installation, bump out and artist fees. Note Artbox does not consider any proposal that budgets artist fees below NAVA rates, and only EOIs that can safely work unattended will be considered. Small scale performance events are possible as part of a permanent installation.
To apply, please complete this simple form. There are no complex selection criteria, word limits, or convoluted requirements. We just want to hear about your ideas and will reach out if we need more information, but make sure to include the following key information:
  • A brief description of the work and of the intended viewer experience
  • Any specific requirements (power, space, etc.)
  • Budget
  • Reference images/sketches are always helpful!
  • You’re welcome to upload documents such as your CV, portfolio, or photos of past relevant works
You can be succinct and use bullet points, this is not a formal application!
You can complete it as many times as you like to propose multiple works, we expect to be able to share several opportunities!
