Butterfly, Ant and Sweet Bursaria
My artwork proposal submission features the Eltham Copper Butterfly a precious endangered butterfly that resides in various locations predominantly in Eltham. Currently conservation attempts are active in Eltham to preserve the life of this butterfly.
My artwork also features two elements essential for the life cycle of the Eltham butterfly, the first being the larval food of the butterfly which is a plant called Sweet Bursaria. In my artwork each butterfly is surrounded by a branch of this plant and through the centre of the piece the sweet bursaria flowers can be seen.
The second essential element featured in my artwork is the Notoncus Ant, this ant is an attendant to the larvae of the Eltham Copper Butterfly, it protects the larvae and in return eats the secretions from the larvae, creating a mutually rewarding relationship.
