Artbox / Lighting Activations, Falls Creek Resort
Falls Creek is a major tourist destination in north east Victoria’s High Country, set at a high altitude surrounded by the Alpine National Park. Economic sustainability underpins the viability of all of Victoria’s alpine resorts. It is vital for Falls Creek Resort to support a broad range of tourism and recreation in the region to support a thriving mountain experience.
For private business, the high operating costs in the alpine resorts mean that certainty of visitation is needed for businesses to be confident to invest. The resort needs to attract both Melbourne and interstate visitors looking for overnight stays and week getaways with the promise of a vibrant destination. In 2022, after two challenging winter seasons due to COVIDSafe principles curtailing visitation Falls Creek Resort Management looked to support local traders through the snow season by dispersing visitor flow across the Village, and to increase visitor spending after dark.
The Falls Creek Village is organised in a ‘dead-leaf’ configuration, with slaloming streets branching out into dead-ends where many businesses are located. Artbox and Additive explored new technologies to create site-specific interactive installations, enhance the appeal of each village zone, and leverage snow and frequent fog for dramatic effect.
Four permanent lighting installations were installed and markedly increased the flow of visitors throughout the resort after dark. The beautification of ‘zones’ through lighting and projections inspired visitors to explore the outskirts of the Village through more amenable and safe pathways. The lighting installations foster a cultural atmosphere in the local community and dynamic flow of visitors in the evenings throughout the village.
