Artbox / Illuminate Eltham, with Nillumbik Shire Council
The Nillumbik Shire is an outer-Metro local government area located in the North East of Melbourne with a rich and proud local culture. In 2022 Nillumbik Shire Council sought to support traders by encouraging the communities of Nillumbik to re-engage with the Eltham shopping precinct. To achieve this, Artbox focussed on outcomes that were meaningful to the local community, engaging for spectators and participants of diverse ages and backgrounds; and a unique creative experience, whether viewed by day or night.
Artbox worked with the Council to develop and promote the creative program ‘Illuminate Eltham’ by engaging local artists and The indirect Object.
- Installation of shadow lanterns fabricated from designs sourced from nine local artists.
- A community workshop series resulting in the fabrication of three lantern installations and take-home UV lanterns.
- Three events featuring lighting design, compositions by a local sound artist, and entertainment for children.
Illuminate Eltham brought the community and back into Eltham town square by establishing placemaking connections through local themes used in both the free, hands-on community workshops and local artist briefs. The activation inspired curiosity and ownership, and creating novel excitement in the community, through accessing art in new and imaginative ways.
